The mighty Kent Morrill, vocalist/keyboardist for the original Wailers departed this mortal coil on Friday, after a four-year struggle with cancer. His wife reports that he was singing "Louie Louie" in his sleep the previous night, which is about equal portions of comforting and heartbreaking. The Louie Report has the story; the band's official website is here. Condolences to his family and fellow musicians.

Kayton Roberts & The Rock Island Line
This makes me happy. Check out talented steel guitarist Kayton Roberts (along with Rob McNurlin on guitar and Jeff Ware on bass) as he entertains the kids at a Kentucky elementary school with Rock Island Line. Roberts played (non-pedal) steel guitar for Hank Snow for about thirty years, starting in the mid 1960s.
Watch as he expertly mimics the sounds of cows, pigs, dogs, mosquitoes, crying babies and laughing ladies with his steel guitar. I don't know who's having more fun, Kayton or the kids.
In The Jailhouse Now (MP3)
Nudie suits don't come much cooler than this one, sported by Webb Pierce as a salute to his biggest hit, In The Jailhouse Now.

Recent Additions To The Ichiban New Bin
Midnight Sound Studio in Danville, Illinois is responsible for some of the most wigged-out sounds I've ever heard. Here's a track from the world's first Amish garage rockers, Willie & the Travelairs, who came to the studio in horse and buggy.
The Fiery Stomp (mp3)
Thanks to Greg O for the add.

Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves (MP3)
Burl Ives (and Grady Martin And His Slew Foot Five) - Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves
Assuming that you've never heard this record, it's safe to say I was as shocked as you probably are now to learn that Burl Ives made a great record. It definitely didn't hurt that he had the legendarily talented Grady Martin manning the guitar for the session.
