Six Days On The Road

From 1961, here is the rarely heard original version of Six Days On The Road by Paul Davis, made into a timeless country truck-driving classic when Dave Dudley recorded it in 1963.  Thanks to YouTuber Mattys45s for sharing it.

The tune was co-written by Carl Montgomery (brother of singer Melba Montgomery) and Earl Green, who also co-wrote another indispensable trucker classic, the Willis Brothers ' Give Me Forty Acres.

Interesting to hear the original version. However, many believe what really gave Dave Dudley the hit was the opening guitar lick on the record.

"I thought I sang pretty good," Dave said. "It had a shotgun guitar, first eight bars," he said, describing a lick played by lead player Jimmy Colvard, who was a teen when the song was cut. "When he hit it with his thumb, he got the note and the harmonic. When he hit that lick on the guitar, they bought it."

The Jimmy Colvard guitar licks on the Dave Dudley version really do define the song in my head, no doubt about it. Not to mention, quickening my pulse...

Very cool. I didn't know about this original version! Dudley "owned" it, that's for sure!

Carl's brother Earl "Peanutt" Montgomery was a great writer. George Jones tried to kill him once. Read the Tammy Wynette book for more great stories.
