Evan Johns

The Austin Chronicle catches up with ailing guitar man Evan Johns, who's still fighting the good fight despite some pretty major setbacks.  I was lucky enough to see him onstage a bunch of times in the 80s and 90s, first with the LeRois Brothers and later with his own band, Evan John & The H-Bombs.

A friend and I drove 2 hours to the Double Door Inn located in Charlotte, NC back in 1987 or 1988. We were incredibly disappointed that the club was 21 and up (we were 19). After pleading with the doorman that these poor kids just drove so far and just wanted to hear Evan, the Man himself was at the bar and allowed us in. "Bartender, these are the boys-Make sure they don't drink nothin' but soda pop. Boys-have a good time". Then he proceeded to give us one of the most unforgettable shows I've ever attended. Thanks for this update.

Thanks for posting the link to the excellent article on Evan Johns. After post punk I became a huge fan of all the Austin(& Austin like) bands ... The Tailgators,The Le Roi Brothers,Evan Johns and the H Bombs,The Fabulous Thunderbirds,Omar and the Howlers etc.Luckily I got to see them all live.Evan Johns was not Country Dick Montana crazy but he was crazy!I still pull out the vinyl and CDs of these bands to give me a boost.

I knew Evan Johns had numerous health issues. He had a website, when he lived in BC,that sold his merchandise. Then the site was gone and Evan returned to Austin.

I am definitely pulling for Evan.

I've seen about 500 live music shows/concerts in my life, and Evan Johns in a small bar on Peachtree Street in Georgia was one of the best! May he rock on in good health!
