Sam Cooke - Shake (2:52)
On June 18, 1964, forty-eight years ago today, Times Square got a brand new billboard - one ordered specifically to promote Sam Cooke's upcoming appearance at New York's Copacabana club. Source: Dream Boogie: The Triumph Of Sam Cooke (2005) by Peter Guralnick.

Amazing! Believe it or not, that was the day I graduated High School (yes, I'm old) and the ceremony was at Carnegie Hall. And guess who was walking down the street while we were waiting outside on line to go in?
Yep. Sam Cooke! A bunch of us jumped out of line to get his autograph in our yearbooks, myself included. I do remember he was in town to do a show, although I'd forgotten where.
I've never seen this picture before, I'm going to send it to the few friends I'm still in touch with that would remember that incident.
Thanks so much!
Great story, Ken. Thanks for chiming in with it!
