I had the Gentry's version of this ditty on 45. It featured Mr. Hart, who later became a wrestler manager. So, is THIS the original version of this tune?
I've been familiar with the Gentrys' version for years and never realized it was a cover, so I was very surprised when I found this. As far as I can tell this is the original version, but if anyone out there knows different please do tell.
This is the original version. A liitle known fact about The Gentry's though, is that they released a version "Cinnamon Girl" a couple of months before Neil Young. It actually charted higher and stayed longer than Mr. Young's.

I worked with Jimmy Hart in the WCW for a brief period of time. Very, very cool guy and he told me they got the song from The Avantis.
