Best of Lux and Ivy's Favorites: Halloween Edition
I’ve resisted doing this for years, but here is a “best of”
volume of Lux and Ivy’s Favorites for Halloween. Who doesn’t need something
good to focus on these days?
Here are 40 tracks taken from LAIF volumes 1-20 of songs
with a “creepy” bent to them. I made a playlist of them for myself, but then
said “what the hell,” let’s make it so other folks don’t have to go through the
hassle of making their own playlists.
I reached out to JR Willaims, who did a cover for one of the
other volumes of LAIF, and he agreed and we teamed up for this cool cover from
one of my favorite (non EC) pre-code horror comics called WEIRD MYSTERIES. I
thought it would be perfect because Here Lies My Love by the Undertakers is
among the set of songs. Thanks JR!
Happy Halloween everyone!

Lux and Ivy's Favorites Volume 20!
Welcome to Lux and Ivy’s Favorites Volume 20! It’s been a
little over a year since the last volume which was fully taken from the
playlist of a tape that had been part of the Something Weird Audio Archives.
Volume 20 is more like the majority of the other volumes in this series, a mix
of tunes from various sources. Here is a
rundown of SOME of the tracks on this volume.
As always I have a running list of songs that I come across
or that people send me via social media etc. Then I put them together in some
semblance to make them “fun” to listen to, or “flow” in a cool way.
This volume has sort of an outer space theme just like
volume 18. There are a bunch of tracks taken from the space themed tape Lux had
made for someone back in the day. The tape was just labeled “Lux’s Space
Discs.” It was a 90 minute tape of every genre you could think of dealing with
UFO’s, creatures from outer space, and spoken word mumbo jumbo of the highest
order. I can hear the questions already; “Kogar! Why didn’t you just put a
playlist together of those songs?!?” Well, the answer is simple; some of those
songs have already appeared on various LAIF volumes over the years, so it
wouldn’t make a lot of sense to do that.
Let’s kick it off with Rocket USA by Suicide, which I think
is a nice place to start given The Cramps mentioned it in various places that
they used to cover this song back before they ever played a show in their early
days.
Next up there are bunch of instrumentals found from various
sources like the space tape and the tapes from Something Weird.
I included Radar Eyes because Lux used some lines from this
song in a live bootleg that I have.
Somewhere along the line I noticed that The Cramps had used
a lyric in Dope Fiend Boogie from this fantastic tune by The Calico Wall.
I Had too Much To Dream Last Night was mentioned by Lux
during a snippet that Henry Rollins used on his radio show; I believe when he
played the STLTU test pressing.
One really great addition came from Diego Carriero who
noticed Black Widow Spider Woman was playing on one of The Cramps bootlegs from
a Cramps show in Greece from 1991. The inclusion of the trailer from Las Vegas
Hillbillies means that it more than likely came from a tape like the Vip Vop
tapes that they played before their live shows. Thanks, Diego!
The song Poison Ivy was long overdue to be included at some
point, but I finally came across an interview where Ivy said the “she’s pretty
as a daisy” line; found in an issue of Greasy Kid Stuff magazine.
I included Blues for the Red Boy because on one of the Vip
Vop tapes Lux used sound from an Allan Freed aircheck that included some of
this song which “The Moondog” used as intro music for his show. I forget who
identified the song for me! Please let me know, and I will add you to the thank
you list!
Alabama Bus was mentioned by Ivy in an interview in the
Boston Rocker newspaper from the early 90’s. I’ve included parts 1 and 2.
I'm Gonna Murder My Baby was mentioned in a fanzine that I
got from Howie Pyro called Flamejob Issue #1, a compilation of a bunch of
Cramps articles from other sources. Not
sure where the original article came from.
Lastly, Stay as Sick as You Are seemed like a fitting way to
end this volume. Taken from one of the Something Weird tapes that is filled
with stuff like this. More of those type songs will appear on future volumes
down the road.
The cover for this volume was taken from Paul Tanner’s Theremin
album that Lux mentioned called MUSIC FOR HEAVENLY BODIES. As always Adam Fitch makes my ideas a reality
with his layout skills. We even made an alternative cover with a “sticker” to
appease the social media censors, made to look like the stickers that sometimes
graced old burlesque comedy albums back in the day.
Enjoy!
Kogar tSA
Thanks to: Lisa Petrucci, Robert Mache, Bruce Milne, Diego
Carriero, Howie Pyro (always) and Adam Fitch…

Aircheck Of The Week
It's your curly-headed kid in the second row on the radio. Before becoming "New York's Oldies Station", WCBS-FM was a hybrid of album rock, Top 40, and R&B. Gus Gossert, later known for his Doo-Wop shows, was the program director and air talent heard in this rare aircheck. It's October 1970 on Boss Radio 66.
